SOPHIE RIVLIN

Sophie is a London-based cellist and performer who tours widely across the UK and abroad. 

In addition to playing traditional concerts, Sophie has a particular interest presenting chamber music imaginatively to audiences via the means of theatrical concerts. She recently received Arts Council DYCP funding to develop her skills as a stage director and in 2022 co-directed 'in Sync' (a co-production between Scottish Ensemble and MishMash Productions) alongside Ria Ashcroft. In autumn 2023, this won a prestigious international YAM award for Large Ensemble. For more information, see here.

 

As a founding member of TROUPE she has performed at venues including Wigmore Hall, Snape Maltings and in festivals such as Oxford Lieder and the SESC Festival Música de Câmara in Brazil. Sophie is also Creative Director for MishMash Productions who she has performed with in shows that have toured to venues including Clywd Theatre, the Big Bang Festival in Dublin and YAM Session 2021 in Norway. She also works with MishMash in their collaborations with other ensembles including the Royal Northern Sinfonia and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as Musical Director or Stage Director. Alongside this chamber-music theatre work, Sophie plays regularly with various orchestras, contemporary music groups and chamber ensembles including the Oliveros Ensemble. She also enjoys teaching the cello and chamber music to students of all ages, for more information click here.

 

After studying philosophy at Cambridge University and cello at the Royal Academy of Music, Sophie specialised in chamber music with a ‘Quartet Masters’ under the Maggini Quartet and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.
